NOTICE TO DOG OWNERS
In 2010, the New York State legislature decided to discontinue the State’s administration of dog licensing. While they still require that dogs be licensed and have proof of current rabies vaccinations, the administration was passed on to the local municipalities. Effective January 1, 2011, the Petersburgh Town Clerk will be taking over the responsibilities previously done by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets pertaining to licensing of dogs.
The increased burden associated with the administration of licensing of dogs, including the cost of mailing, ID tags, forms and collection of required surcharges, resulted in the combined effort of the Dog Control Officer and Town Clerk working together to keep costs at a minimum. This will allow for these additional responsibilities and still maintain an efficient and cost-effective program.
How does this change impact you?
- License fees:
a) the cost for a spayed/neutered dog will be $3.50 ($1.00 of that fee is a state mandated surcharge that shall be transmitted to the Animal Population Control fund – used for spaying/neutering programs).
b) the cost for an unspayed/unneutered dog will be $8.50 ($3.00 of that fee is a state mandated surcharge that shall be transmitted to the Animal Population Control fund – used for spaying/neutering programs). - This year your dog will receive a new dog identification tag, which will have a unique number indicating it is a dog that was licensed in the Town of Petersburgh. This tag must be secured to the dog’s collar.
- If you or your dog loses the original Town of Petersburgh tag, the cost of a replacement tag will be $3.00. The dog will be assigned a new number, but our licensing system will allow us to trace the history of the dog, regardless of the new number assigned.
- If you own or harbor 4 or more dogs, a Kennel (Purebred) License will be required pursuant to the Town of Petersburgh Dog Control Law, Local Law No. 2 of 2010. Kennel Licenses cost $25.00 per year for 4 to 10 dogs, and $50.00 per year for kennels exceeding 10 dogs.
